Mustang Complex News Release

Mustang Complex Fire Update 9/27/12

Incident: Mustang Complex Wildfire
Released: 9/27/2012

Fire managers flew the entire fire on Wednesday and observed some interior spots burning with occasional tree torching. There were no visible large columns of smoke. The most active area of the fire is located in the northwest section between the Mustang and Porcupine fires however, only minimal fire activity was observed there. Thick smoke in the drainages prevented any confirmation of the two fires joining.

Idaho: Fire crews completed indirect hand line construction south of Allan Mountain, in the farthest northeast section. The current strategy is to guide the fire along the ridge top to the northeast and prevent it from burning down into the Salazar Creek drainage. Helicopters will be located in that area if needed.

Dozer line rehabilitation was completed along Butcher Knife Ridge on Wednesday. One to two days of work are still needed to complete the remaining fire line rehabilitation in Idaho. Mop-up, patrolling, and rehab work continues on the southern and eastern perimeters of the fire.

Heat is still being detected in Indian Creek and Spring Creek. There are smoldering tree roots throughout the area, in addition to dry singed pine needles falling on hot ash may cause visible flames inside the fire perimeter. Several patches of unburned vegetation also continue to burn slowly throughout the fire area.

Montana: Light, creeping fire activity was observed in the area of the 2012 Chrandal Fire. There was no obvious heat or smoke near the Gattin Ranch on Wednesday. Both of these areas will be closely monitored by firefighters today.
