Current Situation:
Yesterday, numerous lightning strikes in the Emmett and Lowman Ranger Districts of the Boise National Forest ignited at least 15 new wildfires between Schafer Butte and Elk Creek Guard Station. Firefighters responded to the new starts located 7 miles northeast of the community of Lowman near Miller Mountain. The Miller Fire was demonstrating active fire behavior such as individual tree torching and long range spotting due to windy conditions and bug killed timber. The Trail Creek and 9 Mile fires that started yesterday have grown together and are now over 30 acres. Two other fires between Scott Mountain and the Deadwood Reservoir are also proving to be very problematic due to inaccessible terrain and heavy timber. This group of fires will be called the Deadwood Complex. Additional resources such as hand crews, helicopters, and retardant aircraft from the Trinity Ridge Fire will be deployed to assist in the firefighting efforts in the Deadwood Complex.
On the Trinity Ridge Fire, activity on the northeast edge near West Warrior Peak persists. The increase in activity was the result of warmer temperatures and stronger winds. Helicopters continue to be used to cool the fire perimeter to ensure that containment lines hold.
Today, crews are making good progress in rehabilitating fire lines and removing hazard trees along roads within the Trinity Ridge fire perimeter. Fire operations continue to monitor the fire perimeter by helicopter, patrolling areas of activity.
Suppression Rehabilitation Plan:
Rehabilitation efforts will be directed towards mitigating impacts from fire suppression activities and Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) work. Fire managers will work closely with Boise National Forest resource specialists to coordinate these efforts. For more information about BAER, visit http://www.nifc.gov/BAER/Page/NIFC BAER.html.
The Pine-Featherville road, as well as the road to Baumgartner campground, is open to all traffic. The Boise National Forest reduced the size of the closure area around the fire effective September 6, 2012. The revised area closure is 0402-00-0024 (Revision #6) dated September 5, 2012. Details and a map of the current closure are available on Inciweb: http://inciweb.org/incident/map/3088/2/.
