What Is Fire Danger?

Incident: Chips Wildfire
Released: 9/3/2012

The potential for fires to ignite and burn beyond the initial attack phase is very high and has been demonstrated in the past several weeks with the number of extended incidents California has experienced.

Extremely high temperatures, low humidities, critical and historically low fuel moistures are major factors contributing to the intense fire behavior we have seen.

Defensible Space is crucial to better your home's chance of surviving a wildfire. It's the protective area you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it.

This space is necessary to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and protect your home from catching fire - either from direct flame contact or radiant heat. Additionally, defensible space is also important for the safety of the firefighters defending your home.

How you design your home can improve firefighters ability to protect your homes from fire. For more information please visit www.readyforwildfire.org
