The fire started shortly after noon on Monday, July 2, about three miles northeast of Ely, Nev., and is burning in steep, rugged terrain, consuming pinion-juniper, mountain mahogany, and sagebrush and grasses. No homes are threatened. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters yesterday secured the western edge of the fire. There were some short runs and spotting in the higher elevations. Firefighters responded with helicopter water drops. Firefighters today will continue to secure the fire perimeter and begin rehabilitation.
Ely and McGill residents can expect to see occasional smoke from the fire in the higher elevations and wind-driven ash and soil in the lower elevations.
