Fontenelle Fire Update June 28

Contact:Fire Information Line307-276-3324 ext. 4611

Status: The Fontenelle Fire started on the Kemmerer Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest approximately 3 miles west of the Scaler Guard Station, 33 miles northwest of LaBarge, Wyoming. The fire was discovered around 4:30 pm on June 24, 2012. At this time the fire size is approximately 25,000 acres burning in heavy, dead timber and has burned into the Big Piney Ranger District.

Objectives for the Fire:

Provide for firefighter and public safety

Minimize impacts to oil/gas infrastructure & restore access as soon as safely possible

Prepare and protect structures in Snider Basin

Keep the fire to the east of Clear Creek

Recent Events: The increase in acreage over the past 24 hours is due in part to a three mile wind driven fire run that occurred yesterday afternoon on the northeast corner of the fire.

At 6:00 am on Thursday, June 28 the local unit turned command of the Fontenelle Fire over to the Great Basin Type 2 Team #5, with incident commander Mike Wilde overseeing the fire operations. The incoming incident management team will continue to develop and implement management actions as identified in the Forest Plan.

Today's Strategy: Firefighters will continue to strengthen the anchor point on the southwest corner of the fire and begin constructing fireline on the left and right flanks. Structure protection is in place at the Middle Piney summer home area.

Forecast: A Red Flag warning remains in effect over the fire area until 10:00 pm this evening for winds and low relative humidity.

Closures: Road closures at present include the LaBarge road between the forest boundary to the tri-basin area, South Piney road, all of Snyder Basin and the Coal/Fish Creek road up to the Middle Piney road. Further closures may be needed to ensure firefighter and public safety. The public is asked to be cautious when driving on the La Barge road between Hwy. 189 to the closure at the forest boundary and the Middle Piney road (CR350) as there may be large fire engines, fire traffic and impact from smoke.
