Spearfish, SD- Crews again made great progress on the Crow Peak Fire and mop up operations are underway.

Mop up involves fire fighters patrolling the control lines and watching for smokes that need to be extinguished. Each day they will work further into the interior of the fire putting out the burning stumps or other ground litter that may still be burning.

The fire is estimated at 133 acres and 80% contained.

Brian Daunt, Incident Commander, said at this morning's briefing that "We have turned the corner on a difficult assignment and I appreciate the great team work that all the fire fighters have put in."

He also mentioned that crews will be released they can be reassigned to other fires. Some of the crews from the Crow Peak fire will now be available to help on the Dakota Fire near Sheridan Lake.

There are approximately 100 fire fighters still working on the line and 20 over head personnel in support positions.

Firefighter priorities are to provide for firefighter and public safety, protect heritage resources, and keep the fire from advancing to the west. The management strategy for the Crow Peak fire is full containment with aggressive suppression.

Reminder: Open fires are prohibited in the Black Hills Fire Protection District on National Forest land in South Dakota, except in designated recreational sites.
