Rich Harvey's Type 1 Great Basin Team assumed command of the Waldo Canon Fire at 6 p.m. on June 24 from the local Type 3 Team.
Today's Events:
Overnight, firefighters were able to hold the fire at bulldozed lines, which included protection of the Cedar Heights Subdivision. Previous wildfire mitigation efforts in this area helped to hold the fire line. Structure protection is in place on the fire's perimeter. Efforts are concentrated on keeping the fire to the north of US 24, improving the line around Cascade, and structure protection near Cedar Heights Subdivision. Firefighter and public safety are always the number one priority in conducting wildland firefighting operations. Today's weather presents challenging conditions including high temperatures (88-92 degrees), wind (gusts up to 30 mph), low humidity (7-10%) and little to no cloud cover. The region is under a red flag warning.
Announcement:
There will be a community meeting tonight at both American Red Cross Shelter locations (Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs and Summit Elementary School in Divide) at 7 p.m. Incident Command staff will give an update on the status of the Waldo Canyon Fire.
