June 22, 2012 The Springer fire is located 3.5 miles from Lake George and is burning on the Pike National Forest. The fire is currently estimated at 1145 acres. The fire is burning in Ponderosa pine and grass, in areas of steep terrain. There has been no damage to structures and three minor injuries. There are currently 509 personnel on this fire consisting of 3 hotshot crews, 7 hand crews, 44 engines and 2 type I, 1 type II and 1 type III helicopters for a total of 4. Two heavy air tankers are available as needed by the firefighters. The management strategy for the fire is full suppression and perimeter control, containment is estimated at 59% with full containment estimated to be on 6/24/12. Firefighters continue to construct fire lines and secure the perimeter in order to increase containment. Forces will be concentrating on the fires edge located in Eleven Mile Canyon again today keeping the fire from becoming established on the South side of the canyon. There will be a community fire briefing this evening at 8 PM at the Lake George fire station for evacuees, residents and interested public. Park and Teller County Sheriffs, US Forest Service representative, incident command personnel, and the Incident Commander will be in attendance to present progress made on the fire and to answer questions. There is a fire weather warning with a red flag beginning today and extending until 8PM Saturday. Structure protection resources remain in place however there will not be a night shift tonight. The Incident Management Team would like to thank the local communities and visitors to the area for their assistance in ensuring safe road conditions as operations on the fire continues. We anticipate increased recreational traffic over the weekend and would like to remind anyone using roads in the vicinity of the Springer Fire to exercise caution as they travel.
