257 Fire area closure

Superior, Ariz. (June 12, 2012) - Tonto National Forest officials announced today a temporary closure due to the 257 fire which began on June 10, approximately three miles south of Superior, Ariz. and east of Hwy. 177.

The closure order went into effect today, Tuesday, June 12. The following is a description of the closure area, which includes Oak Flat Campground:

Beginning at the intersection of SR 60/177 junction, northeast along the southern edge of SR 60 to Devil's Canyon, south following Devil's Canyon to the forest boundary, following the forest boundary south and southwest to SR 177, then northerly along the eastern edge of SR 177, north to Hwy. 60.

The purpose of the closure is to provide for public and firefighter health and safety during the management of the incident.

The fire was first reported around 1:30 pm, Sunday, June 10. Driven by wind, the 257 Fire has been active, pushing east and northeast. Low relative humidity and dry fuels have contributed to active fire behavior. Drought conditions in Arizona continue with precipitation this year at approximately 40 percent of normal.

For statewide road conditions and closures please go to http://www.az511.gov/ or dial 5-1-1 from any landline or mobile phone from anywhere in Arizona. (From outside Arizona, dial 1-888-411-ROAD (7623) or 602-523-0244).

For further information, see the forest website, www.fs.usda.gov/tonto. To report a wildland fire, the fire emergency number is 866-746-6516, or dial 9-1-1.
