U.S. Forest Service Reopens Portions of National Forests
The Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture has reopened portions of the national forest previously closed due to wildfires in the area. The following is a complete list of roads and trails that remain closed due to wildfires:
Wolf Gap Fire Closures:
· Mill Mountain Trail #1004
· Big Schloss Trail #1004A
· Big Schloss Cutoff Trail #415
· Tibbett Knob Trailhead Parking Area (along Wolf Gap Road)
Shipwreck Fire Closures:
· Peterfish Gap Rd (FDR 65-A)
Please refer to the Forest Website for revised closure maps.
The Wolf Gap Fire and Shipwreck Fires forced the closure of several roads and trails on national forest system land last week when dry conditions and high sustained winds resulted in numerous fires throughout the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Both fires are part of the Easter Complex Fire.
The Wolf Gap Fire is currently 755 acres and 95 percent contained, while the Shipwreck Fire is 3717 acres and 100% contained. Management of the Easter Complex Fire is being conducted by one of the Southern Region's Type 1 Incident Management Teams known as the Blue Team.
