Shasta-Trinity N. F. Prescribed Announcement

4/30/12 Green Mountain Prescribed Fire Update

Incident: Shasta-Trinity N. F. Prescribed Prescribed Fire
Released: 4/30/2012

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest plans to conduct perscribed fire operations in three individual units totaling 850 acres near Green Mountain. The units are located four miles northeast of Jones Valley on the Pit River Arm of Shasta Lake. The prescribed burning is planned to begin May 1, 2012 and is planned to complete on May 2, 2012. Smoke from the prescribed fire will be visible from Interstate 5, Redding, Round Mountain, Highway 299 and along Shasta Lake. The project is conducted in cooperation with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF). The RMEF has contributed funding for the project, which will improve habitat by increasing the quantity and quality of forage for elk and other wildlife. This prescribed fire is part of an on-going project to reduce large fire potential, improve forest health and wildlife habitat on the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area. The project was initiated in 2001 and will continue into the future. The purpose of the project is to reduce fuel loading to prevent catastrophic fires, to remove trees damaged by insect and disease and to restore the area to a more natural and healthy forest condition and improve wildlife habitat. For more information, contact the Shasta Lake Ranger Station at (530) 275-1587.
