What: Lightning-caused wildfire Detected: August 24, 2011
Location: 8 miles SE of Wisdom, MT Lat/Long: 45˚ 33' 5" 113˚ 18' 58"
Current Size: 3198 acres
Fire Behavior: Saturday the fire burned actively until it was shadowed by smoke from another fire. Today expect continued fire spread in the spruce/subalpine fire fuels. Spotting range should be shorter on Saturday due to the higher humidity from the cloud cover. However, single and group tree torching will be observed and short crown runs can occur in areas of continuous fuel in aligned drainages. Little moisture is expected over the weekend with continued high winds, but higher humidities are in the forecast. No significant change in fire behavior for Sunday or Monday.
Objectives: The fire is being managed to improve vegetation diversity and wildlife habitat. Firefighters are protecting values at risk. There is a Type 2 helicopter staged at the Wisdom District and 3 engines will be patrolling the roads near the fire.
Weather: Today - Another breezy day expected but with more clouds and potential for isolated showers. The temperatures will be a few degrees cooler and humidities slightly higher. Dry low level will keep potential for rain negligible but could see increased and erratic winds in the afternoon with gusts to 30 mph. Maximum temperatures 70˚-75˚. Southwest winds 6-13 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Tonight - Partly cloudy with a slight chance of rain showers. Temperatures 42˚-47˚ with southwest winds 6-10 mph. Sunday - partly cloudy, slight chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Temperatures 67˚-72˚ with southwest winds 7-11 mph. Monday the chance of showers is 30%.
Personnel: 22
There are area and road closures associated with this fire.
People recreating in areas near the fire need to use extreme caution. All recreationists are reminded to extinguish campfires completely as conditions are very dry.
