Tumblebug Complex Announcement

Update Thursday, October 1, 2009

Incident: Tumblebug Complex Wildfire
Released: 10/1/2009

(Oakridge, OR) The second day of the moisture bearing cold front brought 4 - 5 inches of snow in some areas above 5000 feet. Below, intermittent showers in the lower elevations created a wet and cold environment for firefighters. Medical Officer Linda Lange, cautioned against hypothermia from wet boots and clothes. Fire camp set up a boot drying room to support firefighter health. Management rented some rooms at the high school annex for housing firefighters out of the rain and cold during the night.

Mop up is ongoing along the 308 road. Chipping work on the 21 road is expected to be completed by this weekend. Removal of rocks and downed trees on the 2143 is close to completion. Standards for mop up are within 100 feet of the perimeter. Backhauling of equipment has started in the high country.

A warming and drying trend with temperatures in the unseasonable 60's is forecast for early next week.

Effective 6 am, Wednesday, September 30, 2009, the Willamette NF issued a new area closure. The area can be generally described as south of the 21 road, west of the 2153 road, north of the 2144 road, and east of and including the 2143 road, which follows Staley Creek. For a detailed map and description visit: www.fs.fed.us/r6/willamette/partnersites/eicc/index.html

Hunters and recreationists are asked to observe the closure area and respect the decisions made by fire managers. Equipment on the roads, firefighters working on or near the roads and trails and burned trees falling are just a few of the safety hazards that exist in and near the fire area. The largest part of the closure area is around the portion of the fire that does not have established control lines. The threat of the fire making runs during warmer weather conditions also concern fire managers for public safety. The closure will be enforced, everyone's cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
