Constant Vigilance
Incident: Little People Wildfire
Released: 9/7/2009
Little People fire: Smoke on the 126 acre fire above Pryor Creek has almost disappeared. Crews are mopping up carrying water on their backs in bladder bags. The fire remains 80% contained until crews secure and mop up lines along the fire's edge. Hot spots remain in heavy fuels near the fire's edges, and throughout the interior of the burn.Five crews and three helicopters are working Monday.
"Do not be deceived by a little dampness," said Incident Commmander Randy Pretty On Top. "We had tons of rain when all that lightning went through a week ago, and look at all the fires we still had."
At 7:00 Monday, smokejumpers reported that two hours of light rain had not penetrated treetops to even wet the ground on denser portions of the fire. Weather: Monday will have gusty northeast winds with temperatures in the 70's, and sun punctuated by scattered showers and thundershowers.
Tuesday should be drier. The rest of the week has sunny weather predicted with highs in the low 80's on the Little People fire, and mid-80's in Crow Agency. Situation: Isolated lightning struck Monday evening down Pryor Creek, west of Two Leggins, north of Highway 1 west of Crow Agency, on the west side of the Bighorns, and in the southern Wolf Mountains.
Light rains Monday night did not really lower the fire danger, which is currently High. People need to take care when using machinery around the long dry grasses of September.
