Update for the Canal Creek and French Creek Ridge Fires
(Detroit, OR) US Forest Service firefighters on the northern districts of the Willamette National Forest are continuing suppression efforts on the Canal Creek and French Creek Ridge Fires. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
Firefighters are continuing to patrol firelines on the Canal Creek Fire. The fire is currently 99% contained. Management of the fire returned to a Willamette National Forest Type 4 Team over the weekend. The fire camp and incident command post that were located at Lewis Creek County Park have been moved to the Detroit Ranger Station. Road and area closures remain in effect; check Inciweb at www.inciweb.org/incident/1863 for revisions to the closures over the weeks ahead.
The French Creek Ridge Fire is located approximately 1 mile northwest of the town of Detroit on south facing slopes above the Upper Arm Day Use Area. Firefighters have completed firelines along the perimeter of the fire, with rocky outcrops serving as natural barriers to fire spread. Mop-up is underway where safe access is permitted in the steep terrain. Smoke continues to be visible from Detroit. Fire management officials estimate the 2 acre fire is 75% contained.
Firefighters will continue to mop-up and patrol both of these fires until the arrival of season-ending rains. Rehabilitation of the fire areas will take place this fall.
