Cougar Creek News Release

Sunday Morning Update 8/2/09

Incident: Cougar Creek Wildfire
Released: 8/2/2009

The Cougar Creek Fire is at 1052 acres this morning and is 85% contained. A rappel crew was inserted by helicopter yesterday to work hot spots in the area of Sheep Rock at the north end of the fire. The fire has been burning in extremely steep, inaccessible terrain. Crews were pulled off the mountain yesterday afternoon for safety due to threat of lightning.

A Helicopter Infrared detection flight covered the fire area yesterday to find any hot spots that have gone undetected. Another flight will take place today. The Cougar Creek Fire is providing Initial Attack support to the Malheur and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests.

The Cougar Creek Fire will transition from the Blue Mountain Interagency Incident Management Team to a smaller Type 3 Incident Management Team (Incident Commander Bart Singley), Monday morning at 6:00 A. M.

This will be the last regular update broadcast from the Blue Mountain Team. Further questions should be directed to the Malheur National Forest Supervisor's Office at 541-575-3000.
