Backcountry Trails Reopen in Monument

Incident: San Miguel Wildfire
Released: 7/24/2009

Backcountry Trails Reopen All backcountry closures that were implemented at Bandelier National Monument due to the San Miguel Wildland Fire were reopened today at noon. "We urge visitors to the backcountry to use extra caution when hiking near the burned area," said Bandelier National Monument Superintendent, Jason Lott. "Visitors should remain on maintained trails for their safety," said Bandelier Fire Management Officer, Gary Kemp. He added, "Many hazards may exist after a fire has burned through an area. Possible hazards include hidden stump holes filled with ash, standing dead trees, rock falls due to vegetation that has burned, and unstable slopes due to roots burning. Backcountry users may continue to see smoke, as logs & stumps may still be smoldering." Seventy percent of Bandelier is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Many areas can be reached by day hikes, and backpacking and overnight camping in designated areas is allowed after obtaining a free wilderness permit at the visitor center. Day users are not required to obtain a permit, but it is recommended that they check in with the staff at the visitor center for updates on trail conditions before beginning their hike. The terrain is generally rugged with steep canyons, and the average elevation, 7,000 feet, can make hiking difficult if you are used to lower elevations. "Safety of our park visitors is always a priority," said Lott, adding, "We ask that visitors report any unsafe trail conditions they may encounter to the visitor center, or to a Park Ranger." Persons who visit any wilderness area should plan ahead and be prepared. For information about the principles of "Leave No Trace" visit: http://www.lnt.org/
