Indian Fire Near Tusayan,az Picks Up in Activity Due to Dry, Warm Weather
Incident: Indian Fire Wildland Fire
Released: 7/7/2009
TUSAYAN, Ariz. - The Indian Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District picked up significantly in activity due to warmer and drier weather conditions yesterday. The fire grew to about 500 acres and produced a smoke column that was visible from Grand Canyon National Park, Tusayan and Flagstaff. The Indian Fire was started by lightning June 17 and has been managed since then to meet resource objectives such as enhancing wildlife habitat, improving forest health, and reducing the risk of large, destructive wildfires in the future. Last night, firefighters conducted burn-out operations on the north and east sides of the fire in order to limit its growth in those directions. Today, fire managers plan to continue working to secure the fire's northern and eastern flanks. The Indian Fire will continue to produce smoke and may spread farther today due to windy and dry conditions.
