Fire Restrictions Lifted in Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and Adjacent Public Lands

Incident: Fool Creek Wildland Fire Used for Re
Released: 9/20/2007

FIRE RESTRICTIONS LIFTED IN BOB MARSHALL WILDERNESS COMPLEX AND ADJACENT PUBLIC LANDS

Fire restrictions have been lifted on public lands within and immediately adjacent to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex in north-central Montana. The Flathead, Lewis and Clark, Helena, and Lolo National Forests have lifted fire restrictions on all National Forest lands, with the exception of the non-wilderness portion of the Seeley Lake Ranger District on the Lolo National Forest, and the Lincoln Ranger District of the Helena National Forest. In those areas, Stage I fire restrictions remain in effect until further notice.

Fire restrictions have also been lifted on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management and by the State of Montana in Teton and Lewis and Clark Counties along the Rocky Mountain Front.

Fire and land managers from the various agencies and fire management organizations in north-central and northwest Montana stress their appreciation to the public for being proactive about fire prevention and supporting fire restrictions.

Lifting of fire restrictions means that campfires are once again allowed. Land managers remind the public that fire season is not yet over, and to exercise normal precautions with fire. Although cooler temperatures and significant precipitation have moved in over the past few days, this area typically experiences a warming, drying period in early fall. Hunters and others camping and recreating on public lands should remember to never leave a campfire unattended, be certain that the fire is dead out before leaving the area, and always have water and a shovel close by. Smokers are urged to use safe practices when smoking outdoors, and to always dispose of smoking materials appropriately.

Please note that other areas in the state may continue with fire restrictions, open burning bans, and other fire-related prohibitions. It is your responsibility to know what restrictions are in place and to abide by them accordingly.

Fire-related area and trail closures remain in effect on all National Forest lands within and adjacent to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, and are not affected by the change in restrictions on campfire use. Please check with your local Ranger District office for specific closure information in areas where you plan to go.
