The Madison Arm Fire is burning two miles north of the town of West Yellowstone, Montana in the Gallatin National Forest.
The fire was discovered Wednesday afternoon, June 26. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Current size is 1500 acres. The fire is 5-percent contained. About 40 residences and seasonal cabins in the Baker's Hole area were evacuated Wednesday evening. The Madison Arm Road is closed.
Ron Naber of the Gallatin National Forest is the Incident Commander of the Type 3 organization currently managing the fire. Resources currently assigned to the fire:
- Four air tankers
- One medium and two light helicopters
- One Type 2 hand crew
- Two bulldozers
- Three Type 6 Wildland fire engines
A Type 2 Incident Management Team (Jeff Seacrest, IC) is expected to take over management of the fire on Friday. Also enroute to the fire are two Type I hand crews, three additional Type 2 hand crews, and eight additional engines.
Agencies assisting the Gallatin National Forest are the West Yellowstone Police and Fire Departments, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Montana Department of Natural Resources, Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky Fire Deparrtment, and the North Shore Rural Fire District.
Today's objective is to keep the fire south of the Madison River, west of US Highway 191, east of the Madison Arm Road on the west and north of US Highway 20.
The forest will be implementing an Area Closure later today. The closed area will be bounded on the east by US-191, on the north by the Rainbow Point Road, on the west by the South Fork Madison River, and on the south by US Highway 20. The Baker's Hole Campground is being closed. Yellowstone Holiday subdivision is on alert for evacuation.
Stage I Fire Restrictions go into effect Friday at Noon on the Hebgen Lake Ranger District.
The weather forecast for today calls for afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s, humidity in the low to mid teens, and moderate southwest winds.
