Mcknight Canyon Wildland Fire

INCIDENT UPDATED 7/22/2007
This incident is 100% contained.

Summary

The McKnight Canyon fire was reported Monday, July 16th. It covers 85 acres in timber and grass on a ridgetop on the east face of the Tendoy Mountains, 5 miles west of Interstate 15, 10 miles south of Clark Canyon Reservoir. The fire burned on rough ground with heavy fuels of douglas fir, whitebark pine, and mountain mahogany.

Four engines staged in Dillon responded to the fire Monday, July 16th. They were available due to elevated preparedness levels.Ten tanker loads of retardant were dropped Monday until dusk, combined with bucket work by two helicopters. At 7 p.m. Monday, firefighters had dug fireline up the fire's north flank, and tanker drops had almost "tied in," or laid retardant to meet the handline. Managers successfully burned out about 60 acres at dusk, to prevent the fire from making a run through difficult terrain. Dillon Fire Chief Scott Marsh's engine was the first resource at the scene. Dillon and Lima Volunteer Fire Departments and a US Fish and Wildlife engine assisted the first day. BLM Resource Advisor Kipper Blotkamp coordinated protection of the land, while DNRC's Doug Hamilton took command of the incident.

The fire is on Bureau of Land Management land, for which the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has fire protection responsibility.

The fire was contained Saturday evening, July 21st. As of Sunday, July 22nd, four engines remained at the fire, breaking up and dousing piles of hot material, which firefighters call "jackpots," inside the firelines.

This will be the last update unless further activity warrants.
