The Shipman Fire began with a lightning strike in salt cedar trees located in a riparian area near the town of Kearny at about 4 pm on July 8. Local Volunteer Fire Departments of Kearny, Hayden and Winkelman responded immediately and were assisted by personnel from several more volunteer fire departments. Initial attack efforts halted the fire's progression toward homes.
Fire activity is reduced to creeping and smoldering on the interior of the fire line. Containment percentages will increase during the next few days, as local firefighters complete cold trailing all the way around the outside of the 518 acres. They will continue to mop-up and extinguish hot spots, to ensure that tree roots that may be burning underground do not emerge outside of the fire perimeter and start another fire in the area.
The evacuation of Stephens Trailer Court has been lifted and residents are encouraged to return home.
Command of the Shipman Fire has been re-delegated to Arizona State Forestry Division and will be managed by a Type 4 Incident Commander. The team and other resources will be released as of 6 a.m. Friday, July 12.
