Incident Overview

The Cave Canyon Fire is burning on the Cassia Division of the Sawtooth National Forest, west of Oakley, Idaho and 15 miles southeast of Twin Falls. The Great Basin Incident Management Team 1 is managing the fire as part of the Minidoka Complex, which also includes the Eightmile and Deer Hollow fires. All three were ignited by lightning on Sunday, Aug. 5. Values at risk include private ranches, the Rock Creek area, organized camps, summer homes, forest service facilities, developed campgrounds and a ski area. The fire more than doubled in size on Aug. 7 due to high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds during the day, and strong down-canyon winds at night. Suppression efforts have been hampered by limited resources, rough terrain and extreme fire behavior.
