Incident Overview

The Grapevine Fire is burning on the Safford Ranger District, Coronado National Forest south of State Route 266 that runs between Safford and Fort Grant, Arizona. It is approximately 8,000 acres in size, burning in grass and brush at a low elevation. It was caused by a lightning strike June 28. Containment is 10%.

Crews continue to hold the fire south of State Route 266 from the west side Forest boundary east to Gillespie Wash. Burnout and bulldozer operations are being conducted today along the southwest and west perimeters.

Yesterday crews completed burnut operations along Highway 266. These efforts will allow crews to hold prevous burnouts to prevent the fire from moving across Highway 266, the Stockton Pass/Bonita Highway.

Closures: Coronado National Forest lands south of State Route 266, known as Greasewood and Kane Spring mountains.

Local fire departments supporting suppression efforts include Arivaca, Avra Valley, Duncan, Picture Rocks, Pima, Rincon Valley and Tubac.

Smoke may be an issue. Those with sensitivity to smoke are encouraged to stay indoors or limit time outdoors. For further information see the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality website at www.azdeq.gov .

Several other small lightning-ignited fires are also burning on the district, and are being acted upon (Trap Peak, Pinnacle, Horse).

Planned Actions

Resources include seven crews, five engines, three water tenders, one air attack platform, four helicopters (two light, one medium, one heavy, being shared with the Pinnacle Fire) and miscellaneous overhead. Yesterday crews completed burnout operations along State Route 266. These efforts will allow crews to hold previous burnouts to prevent the fire from moving across state Route 266. Crews continue to hold the fire south of State route 266 from the west side Forest boundary east to Gillespie Wash. Burnout and bulldozer operations are being conducted along the southwest and west perimeters.
