Incident Overview

On February 28, 2012 Natchez Trace Parkway Fire Management completed 193 acres on the ML Hiking Trails South Prescribed burn unit. Firing personnel secured park owned structures and ignited the ridge tops to allow fire to slowly back down the slopes. This is the second time the Meriwether Lewis Hiking Trails south unit has been burn since the National Park Service has been managing the area.

Forest Restoration Objectives for pine and hardwood forests

Reduce total fuel loadings from pre-burn levels >30% measured immediately post-burn.

Reduce mean density of pole-size trees (2.5-15cm dbh) by >20% by 3rd burn.

Maintain a pole density of 250 to 600 trees per hectare (100-250 poles/acre) after 3rd burn.
