BAER Update
Even though we are implementing treatments that will help reduce hill slope erosion and flooding, the threat of damaging debris flows and flood events is still there. It is critical that residents downstream of the fire area continue to monitor weather forecasts and act accordingly.
What: Monument Burned Area Emergency Response Team (BAER)
Need: The Coronado National Forest requested the assistance of a burned area emergency response (BAER) team to assess the fire damage to 10 fires, including the Monument Fire.
Specifics about the W. Coronado BAER: Assessments were conducted by soil scientists, hydrologists, botanists, public information officers, a wildlife biologist, a geologist, two engineers, an archeologist, and by two geographic information system experts. The BAER implementation team's role is to execute approved emergency treatments recommended by the assessment team.
Currently:
Seeding & Mulching:
Total of 1,462 acres in the Monument Fire area is being treated with seed and straw mulch, including 79,000 pounds of seed and 3,000 tons of agriculture straw.
Aero Tech LLC - - Seeded 832 acres using a fixed wing aircraft.
Revegetation Services - - Seeded 630 acres using a helicopter. Straw mulching 1,462 acres using two helicopters.
Seeding: Dropped approximately 53 pounds of seed per acre.
Three types of seed (certified weed-free):
Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis)
Slender Wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus)
Annual Barley (Hordeum vulgare)
Mulching: Completion is anticipated around the middle of August, depending on weather and will provide at least 70% ground cover of agricultural straw (certified weed-free) in treatment areas.
Other Treatments:
Roads: Twelve miles of road stabilization including blading, cleaning, clearing ditches and culverts. The road contractors are Advanced Excavating, Trinity Southwest, and Innova Environmental.
Gates: Gates are being installed at White Lily, Miller Canyon, Hunter Canyon, Stump Canyon, and Ash Canyon roads. The gate contractor is SQP Contracting.
Trails: A total of 21 miles of trails have been stabilized. Trail work was done with a nine person crew consisting of eight members of the Southwest Conservation Corps and one Forest Service BAER Specialist.

- Perimeter Trail, 3.7 miles
- John Cooper Trail, 1.2 miles
- Clarke Springs Trail, 1.6 miles
- Miller Canyon Trail, 4 miles
- Lutz Canyon Trail, 3.1 miles
- Arizona Trail, 3.9 miles
- Carr Nature Trail, 1.0 mile
- Carr Peak Trail, 2.3 miles
- Miller Peak Trail, 0.3 miles
