What: Horseshoe 2 Burned Area Emergency Response Team (BAER)
The Coronado National Forest requested the assistance of a burned area emergency response (BAER) team to assess the fire damage of the Horseshoe 2 Fire, which burned a total of 222,954 acres within the Chiricahua Mountains of Southeastern Arizona.
Currently: The recommendations by the BAER assessment team for the Horseshoe 2 Fire were approved by the Coronado National Forest, the Regional Office, and Washington Office. An BAER implementation team has been implementing BAER stabilization projects. Eight miles of trail work has been completed and over 5,600 acres has been seeded. Seventeen gates and 8 new signs will be installed. Road work and road stabilization by contractors and Forest Service crews continues on Forest Roads 41, 42 and 74.
Storm Patrol is on standby to clean out culverts and debris after each reoccurring storm in the and Horseshoe 2 burn area.
Even though the Forest Service is implementing BAER treatments to reduce hill slope erosion and flooding, the threat of damaging debris flows and flood events still exists. It is critical that residents downstream of the fire area continue to monitor weather forecasts and act accordingly.
