The Lefthand Canyon OHV Area Fire was declared 100% contained on March 14 and controlled on March 20, 2011. A few hot spots may remain in the interior of the fire; these will be monitored until they are out.
Most of the Lefthand Canyon Off-Highway Vehicle Area was reopened to the public on Tuesday, March 22. A small portion of the area affected by the fire remains closed, including the Lower Canyon area, commonly referred to as Carnage Canyon, and motorized trails 840, 841 and 842. These routes and the National Forest System lands within them are closed to all public uses until May 27, 2011, unless rescinded sooner. The closure is in place to protect public health and safety and give affected lands time to recover adequate vegetation.
The cause of the fire is not definitive, but based on the activities in the area it is likely it was caused by shooting.
