Incident Overview

Several lightning caused fires continue to burn in steep remote areas of Custer and Fremont County in the San Isabel National Forest -San Carlos and Salida Ranger District.

Johnson Gulch Fire is located 9 miles southwest of Wetmore, Colorado, in Custer County. Contingency lines were completed by the Pike Hotshots, on the north and east side, along Rudolph Mountain trail in Johnson Gulch. Water-bars, which will minimize erosion caused by rain, were also installed along the same line. Fire behavior on this fire is described as minimal. At this time minimal smoke has been visible in the area. The burn area is estimated at 33 acres.

Holt Fire is located 4 miles southwest of Wetmore, Colo., in Custer County. Smoke has diminished considerably, but will continue to be visible periodically, during the warmer portions of the day. The Holt fire is estimated to be two acres in size and will continue to be monitored daily.

Middle Ridge Fire is located 6 miles southwest of Coaldale, Colo., in Fremont County. This fire is about one quarter acre in size. The fire is being monitored from the ground.

These fires are all lightning caused and are being managed for a variety of objectives, including fuel reduction and firefighter safety. Currently, there is no threat to any structures or improvements on private property. Fire managers expect these fires to continue burning. Fire behavior will be determined by changes in weather, terrain and available fuels."
