Broken Snowshoe Fire, #904164

LAST REPORT

The Broken Snowshoe Fire 3.5 miles north of McGrath, at last report was 41% contained. All crews are off the western flank of the fire, the remaining 4 crews have been moved to the southeastern edge and will continue the line east and north. Last night there were a few smokes on the northern edge, Helicopter water drops were utilized to cool these down this area will be checked again today. The Broken Snowshoe Fire remains at 25,345 acres.

At midnight tonight the fire will officially be turned over to the Type 3 Incident Management Team. The new team will continue with the containment objectives on the fires edge.

Partly sunny skies are over the fire today. The weather forecast is indicating temperatures ranging from 62-72 degrees, with a decrease in relative humidity and an increase of winds from the east.

This will be the last press release for the Broken Snowshoe Fire.

Fire Behavior

Moderate fire behavior. The northease portion of the fire is the most active.

Significant Events

Several smaller fires in the Southwest District have been contained and put into monitoring status. Firefighters previously assigned to these fires have been released to their home units or reassigned to the Broken Snowshoe Fire.

Outlook

Planned Actions

Structure triage along Nixon Fork of the Takotna River. Direct attack suppression activities in all Divisions along the Kuskokwim and Takotna Rivers. Develop suppression alternatives for the northern flank of the fire.

Growth Potential

With warmer and dryer weather conditions predicted to arrive by this on Monday or Tuesday there is a potential for significant fire growth.

Terrain Difficulty

Althouth terrain is relative gentle, swampy conditions pose a challenge to firefighters. It is difficult to find a good anchor point because of the erratic fuel growth patterns.

Remarks

No cabins are imminently threatened in the McGragth, Alaska. Three minor firefighter injuries have been reported to date. The fire is burning mostly on state of Alaska lands and some MTNT and Doyon native corporation lands. There are 20 structures and 13 outbuildings in the vicinity of the fire.
