Bear Wallow Complex Wildland Fire

INCIDENT UPDATED 11 HRS. AGO

Approximate Location

41.66 latitude, -123.185 longitude

Summary

Bear Wallow Complex Monday - August 18, 2008 The California Fire Use Incident Management Team has assumed command of the southern portion (south of Wooley Creek) of the Ukonom Fire. This portion along with the Anthony Milne and the Caribou are managed collectively as the Bear Wallow Complex.

Fire Management: These fires are burning with low intensity in remote areas where there are minimal risks to communities or infrastructure. When possible, firefighters are using natural fire barriers such as rocky outcrops and sparsely vegetated landscapes for containment areas, while monitoring fire behavior to determine when and where additional resources are needed to hold within containment areas.

Fire Behavior:

Anthony Milne Fire: The fire is in the Marble Mountain Wilderness about 12 miles west of Etna, CA. Little fire activity is predicted. A finger of fire is backing north down into Wooley Creek but is limited to smoldering fire behavior.

Caribou Fire: The Caribou Fire is in the Trinity Alps Wilderness about six miles southeast of Cecilville. Low intensity fire behavior is predicted for the most of the fire. Smoldering and backing fire will continue in unburned fingers of fuels which are mostly surrounded by rock. No significant runs are expected without a strong downdraft from passing thunderstorms. Winds will be from the south but the Trinity Alps are blocking the fire area reducing the influence of the wind.

Ukonom Fire: The southern portion of the Ukonom fire is near Forks of the Salmon and south of Wooley Creek. The most active portion of this fire will be near the head of Dollar Creek and the Little North Fork of the Salmon River. Fire will continue moving northeast towards Hamilton Camp and Smith Cabin. Fire should not enter Devil's Gulch during this reporting period, as natural barriers will slow fire spread. Isolated torching in timber will continue with active spread in litter and down fuels. Group torching will not carry fire independently without preheating by nearby surface fuels.

Today's Fire Weather: Winds: SE 2-8 mph Temperatures: 75 - 83 °F RH: 22 - 30 % Closures: The previous areas closures along the Pacific Crest Trail (within Marble Mountains Wilderness) and Trinity Alps Wilderness have been lifted. Road Closures: Forest road 37N07 is closed. Forest Road 38N01 is closed from its intersection with County Road 1C02 to its intersection with Forest Road 38N40. Trail Closures: the South Fork Salmon Trail, the Little South Fork/Caribou Lake Trail and the two Big Flat/Caribou Lake trails are closed.
