Transfer of Command: The Alaska Incident Management Team has transferred management of the fires to other teams. Ukonom Complex FireAs of 7:00 am last Saturday, August 16, the northern portion of the Ukonom Complex is being managed by the Great Basin Type Two Incident Management Team led by Rich Harvey; they are also managing the Panther Fire. As of 7:00 am yesterday, Monday, August 18, the southern portion of the Ukonom Complex is being managed by the Wildland Fire Use Team lead by Beckman. Blue 2 and Siskiyou Complex FiresAs of 07:00 am today, Tuesday, August 19, management of the Blue 2 and Siskiyou Complex Fires has been transferred to the Oregon/California (ORCA) Type 2 Incident Management Team. The Incident Commander for the ORCA team is Ken Paul.
Current Activity:
Both the Blue 2 and Siskiyou Complex Fires are in monitor status except for the area near the confluence of Blue Creek and Crescent City Fork. In this area, handline connects indirect firelines on both fires and burnout is being used to strengthen that line as conditions allow.
The fire is still active in the Elk Valley area; however, no line construction has been done. No suppression action will be taken unless the fire threatens to move over Sawtooth Mountain ridge. Handline southwest of Chimney Rock is also being monitored.
Fire activity within the Siskiyou Wilderness is expected to continue throughout the summer as the fires run their natural course and burn out or are extinguished by fall rains. Action will be taken to protect significant cultural and ecological sites if threatened.
Crews are connecting the contingency line south of the Siskiyou Complex (near Bluff Creek) to a road system at Lookout Point. A slow, methodical burnout operation will be used to strengthen the handline. Extra caution is being used in areas to the south of both fires where Port Orford Cedar trees are infected with a root fungus. Boot, tool, and vehicle washing stations are being used to prevent fungus spread to healthy stands.

All subsequent acreages and costs for the northern portion of the Ukonom Fire will be reported on the Panther Fire's 209, hence the drop in total acreage and percentage containment on this 209, which will now be called Ukonom-South. The east flank of the Ukonom fire between Div. CC and Div. VV is being managed under a confinement strategy, and is not included in the percent containment calculations. 3 historic cabins and a lookout are considered threatened. Type 2 IA Crews = 2. |
