Frye Mesa Wildland Fire

INCIDENT UPDATED 5/24/2008
This incident is 100% contained.

Approximate Location

32.764 latitude, -109.819 longitude

Summary

The Frye Mesa Fire burned in grass, oak woodland and mixed brush vegetation in the Pinaleņo mountains ("Grahams") four miles southwest of Safford, Arizona, on the Coronado National Forest. Residents of the Gila Valley saw a reduction in fire behavior the last couple of days, due to significant wetting rain, a reduction in wind speeds, heavy cloud cover, higher humidities and lower temperatures.

The Frye Mesa Road and Swift Trail (AZ Highway 366) are open to the public. All closures have been ifted. Recreation use on Mt. Graham is open for Memorial Day weekend. However, since the mountain received 6-8 inches of snow, the road is closed at Shannon Campground, so that crews can remove snow and fallen trees. Given the precipitation (1.45 of and inch recorded in the past 40 hours) and current weather prediction, it is highly likely the currrent incident management team strategy will succeed. The fire's growth potential is low. No resources were sent to the line today. Most crews, all engines, etc. have been demobilized.
