The Federal Wildland Fire Policy of 2001 reaffirms the 1995 policy and recommends that federal land management agencies within fire dependent communities continue to reintroduce and maintain fire as part of the ecosystem. As a result of the single vehicle traffic collision, the surrounding vegetation ignited, starting a wildland fire driven by strong gusty Santa Ana winds. The wind driven fire burned downhill and to the south along the west side of the highway in very steep rocky terrain. The actions by firefighters working in arduous and challenging conditions prevented the fire from advancing beyond the current fire line. The 18 fire was declared controlled on 1/14/2012 at 1800.The change in acreage is due to better mapping.State Route 18 is open in both directions. No evacuations are in place and no structures are threatened or have been damaged or destroyed.A US Forest Service firefighter has suffered a possible fractured ankle in the course of battling the blaze.

Copper Mountain Fire (Wildfire)

<geo:lat>45.963888888889</geo:lat><geo:long>-113.61</geo:long>

The Copper Mountain Fire was caused by lightning on August 25.
