But, one thing was different -- the crew leaders were asked to report how their personnel had weathered the wind, hail and rain storms late yesterday. Fire managers listened intently as each crew leader recounted the impacts of the thunderstorm on personal gear, crew health and safety concerns. Most told of drenched sleeping bags, flattened or destroyed tents and having to "hunker down" atop the ridges inside the fire area as the intense thunderstorm moved through western Wyoming. Some very welcome rain aided in the fire suppression efforts and helped firefighters gain control of the fire. As of 6:00 PM July 17, 2007 the Salt Lick Fire is estimated to be 80% contained. Personnel and various resources have begun to leave the fire in preparation for turning the fire back to the Pinedale Ranger District. 164 total personnel remained on the fire as of Tuesday evening. This number will continue to shrink as Suwyn's Type II Incident Management Team closes out their service and hands the fire over to the local district Wednesday afternoon. While the immediate danger from the fire..."

"Salt Lick Fire Leaves Benefits for The Bridger-tet (Salt Lick Wildland Fire)"

"SALT LICK FIRE UpdateFire Information Number 866-742-1922Dick Birger, Susan Marzec, Daria DayJuly 17, 2007 9:00 AM For Immediate ReleaseSalt Lick Fire Leaves Benefits For The Bridger-TetonPinedale, WY ... Humans fear fire. From an early age we learn that fire can hurt us. As we become property owners in wildland areas we also learn that fire can threaten our homes and properties. Our tendency is to view wildfire as an enemy to be feared and battled at all cost. But not always. Time and experience has also taught us that wildfires play an essential role in maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem.Years of suppressing wildfires has led to imbalances in the wildland. Vegetation that would normally have been cleared out by wildfire has accumulated to dangerous levels. These fuel accumulations lead to extremely intense fires that can sterilize soils, impacts water quality (erosion can cause siltation that affects fish), change the kinds of plants in an area and do other damage. The lack of..."

"Salt Lick Fire Winds Down (Salt Lick Wildland Fire)"

"SALT LICK FIRE UpdateFire Information Number 866-742-1922Dick Birger, Susan Marzec, Daria DayJuly 16, 2007 8:00PM For Immediate ReleaseSalt Lick Fire Winds DownPinedale, WY ... Firefighters on the Salt Lick fire began mop up efforts in earnest today. Mop up means that crews are finding and extinguishing every remaining hotspot or smoke they can find all along and up to 200 feet inside the fire line. While the area has received precipitation it has not been enough to reduce the fire danger. The sub-alpine fir fuel type that the Salt Lick fire burned in is very volatile and tends to produce firebrands that can spot, or spread, long distances. As the fire area dries out over the next few weeks it is possible for some of the remaining un-burnt fuels within the fire perimeter to rekindle. Mopping up 200 feet inside the fire line will help prevent any firebrands from spotting outside of the burned area. Mop up efforts will be the focus of the suppression efforts for the next several days.As..."
