A weak weather disturbance will move through the region today. The only affect this system will have on the fires is to bring some increased cloud cover and ridge top winds in the afternoon. The generally cool and moist air mass will remain in place, helping to moderate afternoon temperatures and humidity. Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop-up any hot spots on the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex. They have nearly competed fire suppression repair on the western and southern perimeters. An upper level low and associated cold front will begin to move through the region today. Expect to see widespread showers develop late this morning in the west, moving east in the afternoon and evening. Precipitation amounts are expected to be fairly light with the greatest chance of measurable rain in Del Norte County and over the higher terrain. Firefighters are making good progress on a new fire which started on Wednesday. The Empire fire has burned approximately 45 acres and is located in Devil's Gulch and Empire Creek, three miles north of State Highway 96. Weather changes yesterday helped moderate fire behavior, but the small amount of precipitation did little to reduce dry fuels and change current conditions. Temperatures will run three to five degrees cooler, returning them to near normal for this time of year. Firefighters today will continue to complete remaining repair work and monitor, patrol and take suppression action on any fire behavior that threatens existing containment lines.
